For a 5-year period I worked as an occasional substitute teacher in the U.S. education system. Every time I stepped into a school corridor, such was the influence of American mainstream culture in England in the 1980s, that visions of a nervy Michael J. Fox sliding around corners half-transformed into a werewolf would flash before me. That and the nagging thought that one of these troubled teenagers would produce a bazooka from their sock and send me to hell in a Hannah Montana lunch box. With these terrors in mind, I thought it reasonable that I might use some of the high school stationary, the stuff with logos similar to football teams and West Side Story gangs… ‘Bulldogs,’ ‘Gales’ and ‘Rockets,’ of course.
